Jet Icarus (Super mini-pla)

Chojin Sentai Jetman is a Super Sentai series from 1991 and is notable for being the season BEFORE the one used for Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. However, it certainly stands on its own as an exciting tribute to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman while incorporating all the Super Sentai hallmarks such as a giant combining robot.

This set has all five Jet Machines that combine to form the Icarus Haken (an homage to Gatchaman's God Phoenix) and the robot Jet Icarus who is armed with a variety of weapons.

I really enjoyed Jetman, it was a bit more mature (well as mature as show intended for children can be). The uniforms are cool, the villains are zany, there's an honest-to-goodness love triangle.

This Super mini-pla set is a lot of fun to build and combine into the various forms. It was not cheap but holds a high place in my Super Sentai collection.

(Jet Machines) (Icarus Haken) (Jet Icarus)

Jet Machines
Jet Hawk
Emerging from the fog...

A bit boxier than on the show but one cannot expect miracles with these tiny toys.

Hey look: hip joints!

Totally not blatantly a robot chestplate...

FWOOSH!

I originally had Jet Hawk mistransformed in jet mode.

Jet Condor

In Japanese the sound of R and L are the same, hence "Jet Condol"

It almost evokes the X-Men's Blackbird. Almost.

This jet was piloted by the "bad-boy" of the group.

Jet Owl

Probably the hardest number to read but it's supposed to be a "III"

Very much jet, not so much bird.

A neat almost minimalist take on an owl face.

Unlike Hunk's lion from Voltron, Jet Owl is not a leg.
Despite many of the yellow Sentai heroes being the strong/hungry ones just like Hunk.

Jet Swan

I had her wingtips point up to differentiate Jet Swan from Jet Condor.

So ladylike...

Jet Swallow

A nice integration of Jet Icarus' shield.

ZOOM!

Jet Machines System

Not enough stands handy...

"Combine! Jet Scram!"

Icarus Haken
This combined form is an homage to Gatchaman's God Phoenix plane.

The colours are great and I like the triangular shape.

A Pyramid of Power against the Dimensional War Party Vyram.

Final Attack: Jet Phoenix!

"Transformation! Jet Icarus! Complete! Jet Icarus!"

Jet Icarus
Still a boxier 'bot than the later Super Sentai robos but I really like this design.

Fairly generic head.

Awesome Jetman Chestplate.

Decent leg articulation.

Just ignore my nosecone elbow...

Power Squat!

Birdonic Sabre!

Wing Shield!

Ready for action.

Jet Lancer!

Jet Daggers!

Now it looks more like a "III"

"THIS is a knife!"

Icarus Magna!

Icarus Axe!

"Obligatory Hammer-time Reference."

Icarus Crusher!

Whip-crack!

Smashy-smashy!

A comparison shot with Ninja Gattai Muteki Shogun (from Kakuranger) and Cho Cho ToQ Dai Oh (from ToQger)
