Part of the new autumn collection David's Tea Carrot Cupcake Rooibos is apparently the hot new flavour, much like the Pistachio Ice Cream tea from the spring collection it is nowhere to be found. Unless you have a tenacious and brilliant wife like I do and she finds the last tin in the whole store right downtown where you'd think would sell out fastest. Does it live up to the hype? Let's find out.
Carrot Cupcake Rooibos is a blend of apple, carrot, cinnamon, rooibos, cocoa shells, ginger, licorice root, and natural whipped cream and apple flavouring. It definitely looks orange on the spoon before steeping but the colour of the tea is fairly typically rooibos red. Which I guess is kind of orangey already. Upon first sip you can definitely taste the carrot but the cinnamon, ginger, and liquorice give it the spice notes of a carrot cake. Combine that with the sweetness and you've got a decent approximation of a carrot cupcake in beverage form. When I first tried this tea I couldn't place the liquorice flavour but now that I know that's what it is it seems stronger. Not overpowering but more noticeable.
It's a fine flavour, tastes like what it's purporting to taste like, but this is certainly not on my favourites list. I wonder how much of its scarcity is due to people absolutely loving it or due to stocking up right away because it's a limited flavour.
Carrot Cupcake Rooibos seems to be sold out on the David's Tea website as well but you might be able to try it as part of the Fall Collection box set if you're into that.
Semi-recommended.
